July is National Ultraviolet Safety Awareness Month

Enjoying the warm weather and sun is one of the best parts of the summer, but it has its own dangers. July is National Ultraviolet Safety Awareness Month, and Alta Mere has some tools to keep you and your family safe this summer.

Ultraviolet (UV) light is responsible for much of the cases of skin cancer in the United States due to prolonged exposure to sunlight. According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, 85 percent of melanomas and 90 percent of non-melanoma skin cancer cases are associated with exposure to UV radiation. You can even be exposed to UV rays through the windows of your car or home.

In addition to wearing sunscreen every day, you can protect your skin by using window film to shield you from UV rays. In addition to reducing glare from the sun, it is specially designed to filter invisible UV rays and prevent them from damaging your skin. Various degrees of tinting can be applied on the windows of your car, home and office. While it is unlikely you would get a sunburn from UV rays entering through your car window, doctors agree that cumulative sun exposure can lead to premature skin aging and a higher risk of skin cancer. Studies have shown that window tint can keep up to 99 percent of UV rays from penetrating windows, and they are endorsed by the Skin Cancer Foundation as part of a comprehensive skin care regimen.

If you are concerned about your exposure to UV rays, there are several ways to mitigate this and prevent damage to your skin. Window film for your car can be purchased from Alta Mere and for your home from SmartView. One of our skilled technicians can custom fit the window film for you. By taking preventive action, you can protect your skin from damage this summer!
